The Great Wall of China is one of the most iconic sights in China, if not the world, attracting over 10 million tourists each year from near and far. The UNESCO World Heritage Listed site stretches for over 8,800km and is the world’s largest man-made defence structure. The meandering bricks and turrets weave their way across mountains and plains, from far western China to the eastern coast encouraging all intrepid travellers to have a go at conquering it. There are many parts of the wall that are accessible, allowing you to spend a few hours admiring the panoramic views, or a few weeks traversing large sections of unrestored wall. The most popular sections are within a few hours’ drive of Beijing making a visit to the wall achievable in a day trip. Whichever section of the wall you decide to explore, you will be sure to return with long lasting memories. Local farmers discovered the Terracotta Warriors in 1974 whilst they were digging a well, and the farmers are often spotted signing books when you visit this famous site. The giant archaeological site filled with ancient treasures is located just a few hours’ drive from Xian and consists of thousands of life-sized, intricately hand-painted warriors, horses and chariots that had been buried for centuries, guarding the emperor’s tomb. They remain on the same site as they were found; ensuring that the resting place is still guarded for years to come. In fact, many of the warriors still remain buried and are slowly being excavated by daring archaeologists daily. The site is said to be one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of the 21st century. After being buried for so long, it’s no wonder that they now attract tourists from around the world.
